If I could write this book at 10 I totally would! I've read close to 50 books this year, and this is definitely in the top five. I am very surprised it just how much I loved this, seeing as I don't like fantasy. However, it was just really well written and the pace was good I never found myself bored. I felt deeply for all of the characters, even the ones I didn't like. I feel like the world building was really good, and I don't believe there was any plot holes. I really like all the representative, it was mainly focu ed on black characters, there was casual trans representation, there was a lot of casual gayness, and one of the main couples was poly?

Der seltene Fall, dass ich dem "Mainstream" zustimme. So viele gute Bewertungen deuten meist auf glattgespülte 08/15-Lektüre für Jedermann/frau hin. Das ist hier klar nicht der Fall. Originelle Story, sehr eigenständige Welt, handwerklich ohne Fehl und Tadel und, wie nebenbei: spannend. Das ist in dieser Zusammensetzung die volle Punktzahl wert.

Wenn ich mich als Leser einerseits wohlfühle, eine Bindung zu den Protagonisten empfinde, nebenbei Entdeckergefühle die Welt betreffend habe und obendrein nicht intellektuell unterfordert bin, ist das eine Leistung, die gewürdigt werden muss.

The first half or more is very hard to get into, but once you’re into it, oh my gosh does it pay off. Definitely a “trust the process” type of book, but leaves your jaw on the floor time after time.

I am not sure I am going to be continuing this series. The world building took nearly the whole book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a super creative world, and I kept turning the pages in order to make sense of it. But it wasn’t until the last few chapters that I really felt interested. I’ll have to decide if that’s enough to order book 2.
