For such sad and dry content, this book was an enjoyable read. Incredible moving and powerful in its descriptions of poverty. But damn, it was depressing.
I remember reading this is highschool. I loved the imagery. Man were those some hard times. Makes you grateful for what you have and the economy we live in now.
What the actual fudge is this ending???????? I don't understand anything anymore. It was the weirdest ending ever and it doesn't even explain what happens to the Joad family. Do they survive the Great Depression? Do they all starve to death? The world wiLL NEVER KNOW...!! Thanks, John Steinbeck...
I started this book about 10 years ago and stopped reading it when I was about half through the book. I don't remember what made me stop reading. It's been nagging me that I haven't finished, especially this book is on every list of books that a person should read. I am always reminded that I didn't finish.
The book was even better than I remembered. I made a joke that I wish I waited until the economy was better before I read this book, but I think the economy made this book even more urgent to me.
I keep thinking about the characters in this book. I worry about them. The place the book ends is very effective, because I will be worrying about them forever. They will never be okay.

Classic a Month #7.2013
Before I started Grapes, I was expecting it to be this huge, daunting work of literature. I should have known better. Steinbeck's voice shines thru in this story about a family trying to survive the Dust Bowl and Great Depression of the 1930s and made it an easy, if not always pleasant, read. Sometimes I hate Steinbeck for knowing exactly how I feel and being able to put it in words. I know this isn't a typical review for this book probably. I could have talked about how amazingly strong Tom's mother was and how awful the conditions were for the migrants all along the road and into California. How the car salesmen would fleece the people for all they could or how the gas stations wouldn't let the people use the water hose unless they bought something. How they had to camp on the side of the roads and bury their loved ones in the desert and spend their last dollar on a new tire. But that's not what the heart of this book is about. It's about family, those you were born with and those you choose, and the path that you take in life and how it impacts everything around you. Read my full review here.
