I won't lie-- I started reading this book after watching a few of the ABCFamily Lying Game episodes. It was really interesting and, well, I'm a sucker for teen drama. To say that the book and the TV show differ would be an understatement. Before I even got through the Prologue I was reeling. I actually had to reread the cover to make sure I was reading the same book. It's good, don't get me wrong, but don't read the book expecting the same storyline.

As for the book, I really liked it. It was a creative plot and the main character, Emma, had me on her side from the beginning. She's a sweet girl who falls into this crazy situation and has to find her way out. There are a few suspenseful moments here and there along with some minor flirting, but nothing that screams edge-of-your-seat-excitemtnt. There are a few lulls throughout the book that I think are unnecessary, but overall it was put together well.

This last part it my personal pet peeve, but I'm adding it anyway. I want to congratulate Sara Shepard on her writing. Unlike most YA books I've read, she actually writes like an adult and not like a sixth grader. It drives me crazy to read sentences that sound like they were put together by a child. Descriptive sentences pull people in! I don't expect YA books to sound like Lady Emma --because trust me, Shepard's nowhere near that-- but I do expect them to leave me feeling like someone who can put together a complex sentence when I'm done reading.

Overall, it's a pretty good book. I recommend you read it, though there is a cliffhanger at the end, so you need to commit to a series if you want to find out what happens.

Written by the Author of the very famous "Pretty Little Liars" series, the Lying game tells a different story. Emma and Sutton were twins separated at birth. After an incident many years later, Emma finds out about her long lost twin sister Sutton on none other than "Facebook" and sends her a message. Sutton replies saying they should meet up, when Emma goes to meet Sutton, she never shows up, but Sutton's best friends do, confusing her with Sutton. Emma decides to play along. A day passes and Emma finds a note written to her that declares that Sutton is dead and that she must play along and continue to pretend to be Sutton or she's next. Fast paced, Exciting, and keeps you guessing and wondering who the killer is until the very last page!
The reason why I took out one star would probably be because sometimes the story would just drag a little. This book is probably for teens that are at least 14 years or older because it can become pretty violent. Recommended for people who liked the "Pretty Little Liars" series.

That's not all, coming August 15th, it will be made into a TV series on ABC Family!!! I AM REALLY EXCITED!!!

{my thoughts} - I have to admit that after watching the tv series this was not what I had expected. I did enjoy reading it though, I apologize for it taking me so long to complete, I think I fell into some kind of a funk.

This books is about two identical twin sisters that are separated as young children. One is raised by an adoptive family and the other is raised by their biological mother up until the mother drops off the radar and she ends up in foster care. They locate each other and correspond over the computer and through the phone and then decide to meet. The problem however is that they aren’t able to meet because the twin that had been adopted is dead and the story is written from her point of view from beyond the grave – or so to speak. That leaves it the job and obligation of the other twin to discover who killed her, why and what happened to her with little to no help. It’s got a good plot, nice mystery and its full of surprises. It is interesting to watch the one girl mold herself into her twin or attempt to in order to become her twin in a sense so that no one will discover that the other girl is missing. However, it leads her down a path that she isn’t ready to travel and it makes her rethink why she is there taking part in such a disaster, but then she remembers that she was cheated out of getting to know her sister so now she wants to do what she can in order to find out what happened. She learns that she has no real allies in this quest and those that she didn’t think she could trust she can and those that she thought she should trust she can’t. Its a huge web of lying, deceit and misconception that in the end will hopefully lead to some answers and the truth of what happened to her sister.

{reason for reading} – I read it because I likes the {pretty little liars} series. I like how when books are turned into shows or movies how they are changed so much that it gives you a different take on the story and so far I like the take on this story as it makes sense and it is entertaining to read. It seems to be bringing back my passion to reading mysteries.

Since I couldn't get into the PLL books (I'm addicted to the show though), I decided to give this a try, and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the back-stabbing, murder mystery that Sara Sherpard is known for. However, the highschool mean-girl cliches did get annoying at times. The secondary characters are too mysterious to be fully developed at this point and often come off cold.

Overall a solid 4 stars for a YA contemporary thriller. I will be continuing on with the next book in the series.

Had the urge to read/ watch PLL again,  it saw the Lying Game show was on Tubi and I never finished this series back in the day so here I am. I’m listening to the audiobook so the narrator who sounds like a child is a little annoying, but the mystery/ thriller aspect is pretty solid. Definitely not a masterpiece but I enjoyed it and am continuing the series since the show ended in such a heinous way.

As a fan of Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series, and of the TV adaptation of The Lying Game, obviously I had to check the book out, and boy was it surprising.

So many things were changed for the adaptation, one of the major ones being (not a spoiler, it happens in ch1) the fact that one of the twins is dead. I was so shocked by that, in the show we follow both Sutton and Emma, they're trying to solve the mystery of their parents and such. However, I think the idea of a girl posing as her sister, and trying to figure out who killed her is more interesting (again this is not a spoiler).

It was also pretty fun to buddy read this with my friend, I can't usually discuss book plots with people, so it just added to the experience. We both have our own theories that are fun to share.

The only downside to the book was how it felt like certain chapters or scenes were just rehashing info we already had, or not really giving us much of anything to progress the story of characters. But that's more nitpicky, and the book was still entertaining.

Can't wait to see how the mystery unfolds!

Yet another book series I'm reading to satisfy my burning desire for answers after the TV series was cancelled...

Always sleep with one eye open. Never take anything for granted. Your best friends might just be your enemies.

summary
This is about twin sisters who were separated and have never met, Sutton and Emma. Only, Sutton is dead and we don't know who, why, or what happened.

Emma grew up in the foster system while Sutton has lived a pretty lavish lifestyle with her adopted family. Emma gets lured to Sutton's town under the premise that she's about to finally meet her long lost twin. Instead, she learns her sister has been murdered and then gets threatened into pretending to be Sutton so no one will learn that the real Sutton is missing.

The story is told from Sutton's POV as she follows Emma living in her shoes trying to find the truth about what happened to Sutton in a web of drama, lies, and so many unanswered mysteries.

my thoughts
I watched this series when it came out and was absolutely addicted, and so upset when it was cancelled after one season. So, I've been wanting to read these books for a while and I'm so glad I finally made the time because I read this in a sitting and it was so much fun. It was still a fun time with the changes made between the book and the show. I like the characters and I like the aspect of Emma learning that her sister wasn't exactly a great person. I love books that have a lot of morally grey/messed up characters and this one definitely has it's fill.

This is purely a YA trash guilty pleasure read for me. Normally I would have given something like this a lower rating. But I went into this wanting a good time and the same vibes I got from the show and that's exactly what I got.

I do wish the first book had a little bit more information and more questions answered, because it felt like not enough was resolved for this to be a whole book.

I wouldn't recommend this to everyone, because I can see why a lot of people wouldn't enjoy this. If you want something fast and engaging to get out of a reading slump or help with your reading goal this would do it. If you're a fan of Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl and want a trashy teen drama whodunnit mystery I think you would get some enjoyment from this.

Anyways, I plan on immediately jumping into the next book and I'm so excited to see where this goes.
