Another series from Sarah Shepard. Sigh. It wasn’t really as bad as I expected. It had a pretty interesting premise and a cool twist on the
‘evil twin’ trope.
However, it didn’t wow me after that. This first book was pretty much just
a girl getting used to impersonating another girl.
(Ms. Shepard really knows how to draw out a story.) And this idea could be great! There are lots of crazy antics that could occur under this premise. But Ms. Shepard didn’t use them. She tried, I guess, but they weren’t relatable and wacky. They were just kind of dull. Even situations that could have been interesting
(ex. the boyfriend of the impersonated trying to have sex with the impersonater)
were written in a way that made them boring and inconsequential. And the underlying mystery is just confusing. I think Ms. Shepard was trying to make it twisty and complex, but it’s just wild and not clever. But again, this book was entertaining. I won’t deny it. There’s a likeable heroine, rich, pretty, and troublemaking frenemies, a dark-haired, loner love interest, and a dead girl. I will be reading the whole series.
