If you have, or are planning to have children, this should be mandatory reading. I cannot stress enough to anyone with young daughters... READ THIS! If you are just a human who wants to learn more about ways in which sex education (formal and informal) is taught and learned... and what young people do with that knowledge.... highly recommend.
Somewhat mixed feelings on this one. I thought it was incredibly readable, and covers a topic that I care a lot about, specifically how women and girls are socialized when it comes to sex. I thought the chapters on consent and sexual assault were particularly strong, and I appreciated that the author spoke to many young women and shared their stories throughout. I did feel that the inclusion of more marginalized identities--queer, trans, POC--were pretty weak overall, which wasn't exactly surprising, but I did want more. Similarly, I felt like there was a real lack of conversation surrounding physical appearance, and the ways in which the patriarchy, and sexual expectation, have impacted the way women and girls view their bodies, and have led to a frightening increase in disordered eating--for all the time spent going on about skimpy outfits, it felt odd to not really delve into the body aspect all that much.
It also kind of felt like there was a subtle insinuation throughout that there's a "right" or "healthy" way for women to reclaim their sexuality and relationship to sex, with stories from women who reinforced that narrative. I'm not totally sure how I feel about the implications there.
So. IDK, some mixed feelings on this book, but I'm glad to have read it.

While I am frustrated with what our culture of abstinence teaching which science and research proves doesn't work, this book is a good start to change the conversation for parents, schools, and teens.
Every girl and her parents should read this. Every parent of a boy should read this. Everyone should read this.

I liked this book overall and am glad it was published. It made me quite sad though, how girls and women have been so conditioned to find their bodies repulsive and to not ask for what they want and need.
Very good read for any parent.
Clearly the author found some shocking trends in how girls behave in relationships & hook-ups and how the current culture shapes their body image and self respect.
It would have been a more valuable book if she had more examples of girls who didn't follow the current trends. And also perhaps a little more from the boys point of view.
The ending alludes to a healthier culture in the Netherlands and it would have been nice to see this section expanded upon.

There is a lot in this book I appreciated. The directness, the candid message and the research and data. I did; however, find the book hard to reach at times because of the organization of it. I do wish there was more here regarding next steps to help parents, institutions, advocacy groups etc take this research and make policies and practices that would trickle down to everyday conversations with girls. I think this is so much here to digest and I hope there are more classes, workshops, policies that come from this data--so that girls are truly empowered in a society where sex is continually used against them.
