This is a duology, so a review of this book is really a review for both books.
I can only imagine either hating or loving this series. For me, I was dying of the angst (probably the angstiest book I’ve read … maybe ever?) yet also needed to finish the book at any cost. Work? Forget it. Errands? Forget it. Answering phone calls? Forget it.
I have so many criticisms of the book (ex. Could so much of the conflict have been avoided with literally a single conversation? Could it have been shorter?), but what trumps it all is this book’s “unputdownability”. I HAD TO SEE Macon and Lennon end up together.
I hated Lennon’s dad, by the way. I don’t think I was supposed to, but I totally did. Anyone else with me on that? I won’t put spoilers here, but like come on. You can do better, Trent.
Macon and Lennon’s relationship is ToXiC. No doubt. But this also a self-identified dark romance, so I think it’s fine, as long as we all understand that in real life, many aspects of this relationship would be ill-advised and unhealthy.
In the end, this book had its faults, but hell if I cared. Macon and Lennon took up residency in my head and nothing and no one could get me to stop before it finished.

4 years later and we're revisiting Macon and Lennon. Lennon now lives in Paris and is a thriving artist. Macon is back home and running the rec center. Lennon is called back home due to a family emergency and her and Macon see each other for the first time in 4 years.
I really like that we jumped back and forth between the present and the past when Lennon goes to England. It helps to fill in some of the blanks and questions we have.
I wanted to hate Macon for what he did to Lennon, for just leaving her at the end of the first book. To think that he was just messing with her again. Once I read the real reason it made sense
Lennon fell into a hole of self-destruction. She felt cast aside and used by Macon. She felt rejected by her family. Over the 4 years of being away from her family, she created a new identity for herself. One that was strong, confident, and went for what she wanted. She created a whole new life for herself in Paris.
Sam. Wow, has she ever redeemed herself. I absolutely adore the friendship between her and Lennon. Sam is the kind of friend that will fly halfway across the world to hold your hand when you are sad. She is absolutely incredible.
I was really annoyed about the amount of miscommunication between Lennon and her family, but then we found out the true origin of everything. It wasn't really miscommunication, noone really knew what was really going on, everyone only had pieces of the story.
I figured out some of the twists early on in the book. BUT the big twist I didn't see coming! That was a bombshell and changed everything!
