So glad I decided to finish up my 2019 reading year with Crier’s War. This was one of my most anticipated 2019 releases and it did not disappoint. For her first published series, Varela has done an impressive job of crafting an original piece of work. Where many fantasy books right now seem to run on the same skeleton universe, it was great to read a fresh and unique offering. You can feel how much this book meant to Varela in writing it, and it’s great to see a talented young author putting out wlw content for the YA genre from the beginning. Can’t wait for the sequel and for wherever else Varela’s writing career will take us.
I really liked Crier's War, but unfortunately it just didn't click with me enough to be able to truly love this book for reasons I can't quite put my finger on. I'm definitely planning to continue on with the series as future books are released, though! :)
My rating / score: 3 1/2 out of 5 Stars on the Goodreads rating system; 7 out of 10 on my own personal scoring system.

Extremely YA with a slow beginning, but I liked the characters enough to want to read the sequel.
This was interesting, but I got annoyed with the characters way too often. To be fair, pretty sure that's just the headspace I'm currently in (plus I am most definitely moving away from YA), rather than anything being wrong with the story. Anyway, I'm gonna hold on the sequel to this one for now, come back to it later when I'm feeling more generous.
So tired of unrequited teenage boy love goodness fuck off.

i have been waiting for my entire life for a book where the i-want-to-kill-you-but-also-i-love-you trope was done correctly. it seems i will be waiting another lifetime.
it started out pretty good, but along the way it just lost me. i didn’t understand the characters, and had no feelings towards them. the romance didn’t interest me.
idk. i think im gonna take a break from y/a because i’ve been nothing but disappointed lately.
