Y'all. Dudes. Peeps.

Who knew that the hate to love story I was waiting for was "I'm gonna get close to her so I can spy on her and then kill her" to "let's make out in an inn by the side of the road" to "well I guess it's time to kill her now." Oh wait. Yeah, I knew. That meme about wanting a true enemies to lovers story where our protags genuinely hate each other and want to kill each other and find themselves leading armies against each other, staring longingly across the battlefield at each other as they make the call to attack?

This was that but with robots and magic lockets and it was amazing.

I so badly wanted to love Crier’s War, especially because it seemed like something I would devour, but unfortunately it ended up falling short of my expectations.

While things were happening and the plot was progressing, everything felt incredibly slowly and had almost no emotional impact on me. The twist that happened around the 60% mark should have affected me more than it did, but the execution  didn’t work at all and it ended up feeling like not a big deal. I was often bored by the characters and the story, which made reading this book feel almost like a chore until the last quarter of it.

That said, I think the prose of this book was lovely and that Ayla and Crier are the embodiment of genuine enemies to lovers. It’s refreshing to find a book marketed that way that actually delivers on the trope and though I didn’t enjoy Crier’s War as much as I wanted to, I might pick up the second book in the future just to see what happens.

This book made me realise that I need to start reading WlW fantasy more.. Like WAY more 'cuz OMG this was great! The plot, the characters, I just loved everything! The plot was so well thought out and complex, creating a world that is both complexe AND easy to understand is quite the feat. Crier and her secret
5nd pillar
gave her some troubles
thinking of you, Kinok
but also got her some good
thinking of you, Ayla lol
. Ayla was always stressing me out, with all her plans and ideas that were super dangerous and potentially life threatening, but I also liked that about her, how she didn't fear the worst if she could get what she wanted; freedom and revenge. The ending KILLED me, like how are you going to tell me all that and just END?? It's a good thing that volume 2 is already out or I would not be ok right now
