I really enjoyed the interaction between the main characters. It dragged for me a little in the middle but I loved that the end was not what was expected. It really shows how someone can come into your life and make a huge impact in a positive way. I loved how they helped each other even though it seemed as if only one really needed to be helped.

This book feels so human and placed me right in Tallie and Emmett’s world - cozy, dark, vulnerable. It does the hard work of letting us in on the pain they both experience for different reasons while highlighting hope and goodness in the world. It reminds us how important authentic relationships are to our own healing. And it highlights the personal, emotional, physical, and mental toll that systemic & institutionalized racism has on individual’s lives. The language and imagery is palpable and the story profound. I absolutely recommend!

Couldn't put it down. Loved the characters. Found the organization a bit off ... so much disclosed about our mystery guy all at once! Also had to suspend disbelief quite a bit in more than one element of the narrative. Was delighted by the conclusion, although the resolution was a bit rapid. Nevertheless, it's departure from formula was very refreshing.

This was fine. It started off strong and then fell off towards the end.

I finished this a few days ago, but wasn't sure on my rating. I am giving it 3.5 rounded up to 4. This book was very sad. Parts of it got a little long and wordy, but overall I liked the characters and the story.
