A really nice completion of Phedre's story! Weaves between boring and intense, sad and hopeful. It resolves many storylines and plot threads. Such an interesting world, as an interpretation of our own.
I had a really hard time staying engaged in the first half, but I was drawn in by the second half.

"We pay for the sins we do not remember, and seek to do a will we can scarce fathom. That is what it is, to be a god's chosen."

Kushiel's Avatar by Jacqueline Carey is the last book in Phédre's trilogy. These books were so very long, but worth it! This book book finally wraps up all the loose ends and ends on a high note full of hope and love.

This time we follow Phédre ten years after the last book, while she continuously searches for a way to free Hyacinthe from the curse of the Master of the Straits. Her path eventually crosses with that of Melisande, yet again, but this time to find her son, who has gone missing.

This had so much adventure in it and so much happened! This seriously could have been two books wrapped in one. I still love Carey's writing style, it's beautiful and poetic, but never shies away from horrors of humanity, of which there are many in this book. There are scenes and descriptions in this book that were hard to read, and is not meant for the faint of heart.

I love all the characters we come to know and fell hard for the enduring bravery and resilience of Imirel as well as Phédre. We got to see different lands, languages, foods, and belief systems. We learn about the strength of women and what they endure, and we learn about the power of love. Sounds cliché, doesn't it? But the message is clear in all the beliefs in this book, love is the thing that will save us and make us whole.

As Elua bid his children of Terre D'Ange, "Love, as thou wilt."
