This was a great volume!

I wish it was slower paced, it feels like Sari was captured then quickly rescued, but considering the general tone and approach to this series I can't really complain. I'd like to say Fenrir's an interesting villain, but he's your stereotypical power hungry bad guy who wants the throne for himself and will kill anyone who opposes him, blah blah blah. Nir isn't that much more interesting but at least offers a new perspective on servants protecting their masters.

What really shines in this volume, though, are our little group of misfits. Anubis is hands down the best character in this volume, showing his calm and rational thinking and appropriately talking down Leonhart when he's was getting too emotional. Jor was also great and I loved his fight with Nir as well as his friendship with Anubis. I also really appreciate how race is still being discussed in this series, as it is revealed that Leonhart's decision to put Jor as the head of the Royal Guard was frowned upon. Having moments like this emphasize not only the inherent racism in this series, but also how different Leonhart is compared to other rulers by looking past someone's race and focusing on their abilities instead.

Finally, Sari was great as always and I love how she's not giving Fenrir the attention he wants, but also sharing a common bond with him. She can acknowledge and sympathize with him in regards to his childhood, but isn't so blinded by pity and sympathy that she'll go along with his plans. Also, her blatantly calling him weak was perfect and I was here for it.

Not sure how the story will progress past this arc, curious to see whether this is the beginning of the end to the series. Anyway, I'm more curious about what's gonna happen next, I need the next volume now!

(3.75) On reste dans la dynamique du précédent tome ! Le méchant pas si méchant fait surface, ce qui permet de mettre en avant certains personnages dans leurs meilleurs aspects, même si cet arc est en réalité bien classique.

I CAN'T EVEN WITH THIS SERIES!!! It is such a good political fantasy! Please read it! I can't fangirl enough!

Quite the different take on "Beauty and the Beast" but I did enjoy it. That cliff-hanger ending though... geez. Eagerly awaiting volume 2's release this year.
