This book is an informative story that takes place between Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, helping to fill Adam Jenson's missing time post-panchea. The amount of technological references might be difficult for some readers to grasp or imagine.

This is a good book and reads like a good scifi action movie. While it's a great tie-in between Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, it also stands up by itself as a great story.

More than a tie-in, I'd say this book really set the stage for Mankind Divided and this story should at least being more acknowledged in the videogame. Only drawback I have are the Hollywoodesque stunts that Adam pulls off in some of the action sequences. Adam and Pritchard exchanges are really good, one of the advantages of having the writer of the game also working in this book. A certain cameo also brought a smile in my face and didn't find it that intrusive. I'd say this is essential if you are playing the Adam Jensen games and you are into reading.

I have a soft spot for the franchise. So even if this isn’t the greatest piece of literature, it definitely makes me want to play the games again.

Now this is a video game novel. I have read several books of the same nature (i.e. video game series that are either novelized or expanded on with books) and this is by far my favorite. I think it benefits greatly from being an original story instead of a retelling of one of the games. Books like that often seem tedious and poorly characterized because the author is focusing so hard on making it accurate to the game (ahem, looking at you Assassin's Creed).
Deus Ex: Black Light, however, is a fantastic thriller that spans the gap between Jensen's two games. It introduces characters and forces that are seen in Mankind Divided as already being well established in Jensen's life and shows how he came to be in contact with them. It shows Jensen's struggle with waking up after being on ice for a year and having to cope with how much the world has changed to hate augmented people like him. Best of all, Jensen himself is written fantastically in this novel. Swallow really did his research and really goes through the effort of making our protag every bit as cynical and sarcastic as he is in the games, which is something I am SO thankful for.
All in all, amazing novel. I'm so glad I decided to read it!
