Lost points for what happened to the dog.
First book is better, but still good (slower especially in the middle)
But there are some really good twist/reveals in there.
Spoilers / rant:
-I WAS SO MAD WHEN SHE KILLED THE DOG
-I really didn't like the implications that Vin and Kelsir had anything romantic in the first book, they literally had a father daughter relationship. Ig its purpose was just to make Elend deal with insecurities but still ew.
- Also not a fan that when Vin killed all the generals in Stafs army and just conveniently left behind the one decent general by chance
- wtf Marsh
- Sazed should have just read the carvings on the spot 😠ik he doesn't have a photographic memory but should have stayed longer
- Tensoon is a good boy
- idk how I feel about Elend being a mistborn now but I'm glad he's not dead

It was soooooo slow until the last 10th. The very end was action packed and great. Most of the book was supposed to be character development but was not very convincing plus I wasn’t that attached to them.

As I make my way through Sanderson's Cosmere universe, his strengths and weaknesses as an author become more apparent.
Strengths: Setup and Payoff, plots, schemes, mysteries, wonder, magic, history, machinations.
Weaknesses: Ironically for this volume: political intrigue. In some ways, character, especially for the antagonists. Tension and stakes, when it's not directly related to the overarching mystical storyline.
For as much as I loved the setup, payoff, and mystery of the Major storyline that occurs in this book, the main bulk of the first two thirds (the siege of the city and the political turmoil that results) was at best boring and at worst a chore. Things progressed so slowly and amounted to so little, all things considered, that it made me feel like I'd wasted a lot of time. The characters in this volume are strange. In some ways they're fleshed out beyond what I'd expected from volume one, but in other ways they feel like hollow reflections of the more interesting people I met in The Final Empire. Vin and Elend's relationship feels weak and forced, the members of the crew often hardly appear, and the new antagonists are one-track, predictable, and in one case, so gross as to be lame.
Which is not to say I haven't been having fun. Sanderson is great at writing satisfying books, even if they aren't necessarily the most well-crafted. His imagination for setting, magic, and plot are limitless and astounding, and make up for the clunky prose and stiff characters. Once I got to the point of the book where Events Begin To Occur, I found I couldn't put it down, and rushed through to the end, a typical case with his writing that I've come to expect three books in. I didn't hate this book, I just didn't like it as much as I hoped, and I pray that the finale to the original trilogy doesn't let me down.

That...did not end how I expected. This trilogy has had enough plot twists that I genuinely have no idea what to expect to happen anymore. No matter how many times I feel like I'm starting to understand what's going on, I'm proven to be totally wrong. Needless to say, I am more excited than ever to begin the final book because I desperately need to know where this is going now.
