Sometimes delightful, sometimes plodding.

I like the parts with Arthur and Merlyn - but I'm struggling with the other characters (many of whom are horrible). I'm glad I finished the first part at least.

This book, and I mean this genuinely, might be among my favorite works of political theology. It's so funny and charming and full of the classic British understatement that it's easy to miss the social and political commentary (or that commentary is too jokingly on-the-nose or oversimplified to seem serious), but it is a truly incisive and brilliant bit of critical theory. The theological tones are similar--often joking (and joking well, I might add--White is hilarious) but with an underlying deep understanding of human nature. That human understanding shows itself in his emotionally rich and deeply lovable characters.  Arthur's willful ignorance, Lancelot's guilty virtue, and Guinevere's serene, twofold devotion form the core of the book, but Elaine, Gawain, Agravaine, and Pellinore (just to name a few) as as unforgettably charming as the love triangle. Overall, an excellent read on every level.

I absolutely adored this book.

I loved how fun and anachronistic the first part is. I loved how we never were with Arthur from his POV for very long after the first part. I loved the relationship between Arthur and Guenevor and Lancelot. I loved how every member of King Arthur’s court is given depth. I loved the Orkney faction. I loved the way this book treats women - yes, it’s dated, but this book goes out of its way to explain all of the actions of the women, to explain all of the societal conversations and traps of the time, to make sure the women seem as real as the men. I loved the ending. I cried at the ending. It’s so perfect. King Arthur remembering his time as the Wart, nostalgic for his lessons and his simpler life, and realizing where he went wrong, wishing he could have a chance to do everything again.

I loved this book.
