Okay, I need to be honest in this review, it took me a loooong time to finish this book. This is partly because I physically read it and I mostly read audiobooks these days. But I think it is mostly the pacing of the read, the many tangents the authors takes, and also maybe my lack of interest in Russian politics. I loved the characters and the story is beautiful, but for me, that did not make me want to pick it up at every opportunity. I did finish this read, and there was a time I thought I would not, but mostly to see the characters conclusions. I think a younger me would have ranted and raved about the messages in this novel. Me at 28 is not that impressed.

Slow start, I was struggling to be interested in the character(s) and story line. Maybe I wasn’t in the right state of mind to read! I really enjoyed rules of civility so I was really surprised by my lack of interest.

Loved the premise, the language, and the focus on purpose. This book weirdly did take me a long time to read though. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, it’s just not quite the compelling novel that draws you back.

Cleverly set, the whole action happens in one place, except for a few excursions for flash-backs. The world outside is changing, and some of it trickles in. However, what does not change is just as interesting - and means as much a gentle criticism of the system (without commenting on the philosophy behind it) as what does change. I did enjoy the tongue-in-cheek irony. The comment about the use of names in Russian literature was the funniest one in my eyes. A book I really enjoyed and would gladly read all over.

The ending was so good
I love how this book felt like an adventure when the cast and the setting was so small
Such an excellent read
