Excellent introductory work on the early medieval period that is so often (unjustly) called the dark ages. A quick read, very wide in scope, that readily demonstrates the interconnectedness of the medieval world and how much of it defies our modern stereotyping.
Minor: Misogyny, Violence, Child death, Infidelity, Islamophobia, Trafficking, Religious bigotry, Pregnancy, Murder, Alcohol, Antisemitism, Classism, Confinement, Torture, Grief, Xenophobia, War, Death, Slavery, and Racism

Great overview of the Middle Ages. From the beginning to the end of each chapter, there is a tendency to start with an example and wind around until it's brought full circle. This is occasionally disorienting but ultimately helpful in driving home points. Reading this book impressed on me that, in fact, the Middle Ages are an awfully broad period to be confined to one book.
Minor: War, Rape, and Slavery

First of all: Gorgeous cover
This book complicates things and tropes about medieval world that should be complicated. Fully delivers on this promise.
However, it seems to expect a certain level of knowledge about the time period from the reader. It only focuses on the parts that complicate the picture, not the picture as a whole, it expects you to know it.
