I remember loving this book growing up! It was a very nostalgic read for me now and still very enjoyable.

The Magic Half is a magical time travel story that follows Miri and Molly as they connect from 70 years apart. The story focuses largely on how each girl feels within the family they each have, with bits of the history of Molly’s life twisting into Miri’s. Annie Barrows keeps readers drawn into the story with fun twists, a quick pace, and lots of suspense. Good and bad are very black and white in this story which lends itself to the satisfying ending. I recommend for young readers or anyone looking for a quick, comforting story.

I related a lot to Miri and her imaginativeness. My favorite part of the book by far though is the house the story takes place in, it is just very fun to picture! I do prefer when there are more complex villains with the potential for redemption, but I think these characters are all still fairly realistic and work well for younger readers.

TW: This book does include mentions of some domestic abuse, none is described in detail but it is threatened and alluded to.

Cute, but nothing special.

Good, clean, non-threatening magic story for mid-upper elementary. The ending felt a little flat, but then again, tying up the loose ends in time travel books often leads to those weird "but if it happened in the past, how come they didn't remember it that way in the first place" kinds of conundrums. Fun read, anyway.

I read this way back during my middle grade years and it stuck with me. I, therefore, forgot the name and after some help from goodreads sleuths in the forums, discovered it again. I haven't reread it, but I remember it just being really heartfelt.

Good summer book for girls 7-10. Annie Barrows, of The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society fame actually got her start as a children's writer. From her writing you see that she is obviously a skilled writer, she puts together a good suspenseful story. Although it was a children's story, it used enough advanced writing conventions that I didn't get frustrated or impatient with it.

This is a cute story about time travel and belonging. It sounds like it might be pretty over the top, but it's actually pretty well done.
