I will say that the beginning was very interesting and it is a fleshed out and rich world, but I’m a plot junkie. I need a driving plot. Hanging out with characters and following their life story just isn’t my thing, but I know that it’s other peoples. Also, why was I thinking this was YA for some reason? It’s not

Like most people, The Assassin's Apprentice was my first experience reading Robin Hobb. This first entry into The Realm of the Elderlings had me gripped from the beginning.
Fitz's story is filled with continued tragedy and emotional turmoil that makes you want to keep reading to see how he is going to make it through.
The Assassin's Apprentice is written in first person, so that may be a deal breaker for some, but I would strongly suggest to give it a chance. Hobb's beautiful prose and character development makes up for the times Fitz is an unreliable narrator. The fact that the book is written in first person really adds to the emotional impact of the story.
Robin Hobb does a wonderful job of getting the reader to be invested in each new character she introduces (either out of love or hate).

If you have never read Robin Hobb or have only heard about her, I would definitely recommend you give The Assassin's Apprentice a try. Especially if you enjoy character driven stories and emotional prose.

I really enjoyed this and from the first page I connected with Robin Hobb’s fantastic prose. It is a slow burn but I love a slow burn so it wasn’t a problem for me. I can’t wait to continue the series and learn more about this world.

Coming back to Robin Hobb for the first time since the 90s (I got far too swept up in Robert Jordan once someone introduced me); it feels like coming home. The introspection and themes are so good.
