This story is a truly lovely tale that reads like an old, traditional fairy story - in a way that makes it a children's story, but stays true to the balance of bargains and wild things and danger and magic just at the corner of your eye but also hidden and waiting everywhere.
I rather adored Lillian very swiftly, and the way she was shown searching for fairies but also offering kindness and care - and respect - to all manner of wild things, and looking only for the fun and the magic of it was simply wonderful.

I read The Cats of Tanglewood before I read A Circle of Cats and I wish I'd done it the other way around. The Cats of Tanglewood is certainly a more fleshed-out version of this book, but it felt over-indulgent on the author's part, and rambled on when it needn't have. A Circle of Cats is much more cohesive and enjoyable. The story is lovely and charming beginning to end.
