I really loved Cain's Heart series so it seemed like a natural idea to pick this up. Kick is the protag of the story and, while prickly, is not unlikable. She's developed a large set of defensive skills due to some (immediately explained) childhood trauma as well as an obsession with missing kid cases. A mystery man shows up to take advantage of her skillset (and history) and the story jumps from there. It's a really interesting read because on top of the straight ahead mystery component, Cain does a great job of looking at the conflicting and confusing emotional repercussions of childhood trauma and abuse. This makes it sound heavier than it was, but it was a really solid read.

I received an early peek at this one from the publisher via Netgalley. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down! The main character, Kit "Kick" Lanigan was an interesting character and has a lot of potential as the centerpiece of this new series. Kick is such a strong main character, but deeply flawed after her 5 years living with the family that had abducted her. She reminds me a bit of Lisbeth Salander in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books, but these are rated more PG-13 than those. I highly recommend it and predict a lot of people will be reading it when it comes out in August.

First Thought when Finished: One Kick by Chelsea Cain was a fascinating look at a subject matter that isn't broached much in fiction. I really enjoyed it! I would say the 2nd half of the story was stronger than the first half so stick with it. I hope there is more in the series and that we learn more about these characters.

This was a good I'm-so-busy-I-don't-want-something-too-heavy read. Despite the very serious subject matter (child abduction and child pornography), I found the book weirdly comedic in a way that slightly disturbed me.

I received an ARC of this book from my job as a bookseller. I have always loved Chelsea Cain's books and am always recommending Sweetheart to people looking for something a little different then your average mystery. Her new series does not disappoint. I finished it in 2 days. I am only sad that I now have to wait so long before the next one comes out. Her character Kick (Kit) had a rough few years but was later rescued from her kidnapper. After that ordeal she learned many different ways of defending herself and being able to take care of herself without others around. She is a no nonsense kind of person. In her town she keeps newspaper articles on other missing kids around the state and country looking for similarities among them when she meets a man who can help her search for the missing children. He has many outside resources and uses her passed experiences to help track down some other recent missing children. Together through a house blowing up and almost being killed by another kidnapper she makes it through to help others who could not help themselves .
