A very well crafted book, full of suspense and intrigue. Trigger warnings for lots of graphic descriptions of surgeries, and internal organs, etc. I did like this book, even though it did gross me out a bit at times. I Don't know how I feel about the ending and I see that this is going to be a duology. I will be reading the second book, for sure.

Closer to a 2.5 - I love generally love books about plucky females in historical time periods who buck convention to be detectives, etc (Lady Darby, Lady Julia Gray, and Veronica Speedwell are all favorites) but this book was a miss for me. Most of what Hazel did was too far outside the bounds of society to feel at all believable, even with an absent father and a distracted mother

such as managing to live alone for months on end and convince her entire house staff to assist her with dressing as a man, leaving the house without a chaperone, and turning the family castle into a hospital for the poor.

The fantasy aspect was fairly low for the vast majority of the book, and it might have held my attention better if it were presented earlier.

i think the book was okay, i didn't buy the romance unfortunately and wasn't necessarily attached to anybody and the ending fell flat for me but i do root for ms hazel sinnett <3
