Hope there’s a sequel! Great gothic mystery with history and supernatural slant. I was left with some blank holes about the protagonists family and how the pieces fell together?

3.5 stars I thinkkkkk !! took me a long time to finally finish, but was overall entertaining and fun
Čteno v (ne)bookclubu s Eff (a Mem).

I am weeping onto these pages whew
This was everything I needed to romanticise my way through the last of this degree and into med school, so thank you Dana, thank you.
A gothic love story centred around a female med student determined to get her license in the 1800s, midnight grave robbers stealing into cemeteries and the urban poor going missing off of the streets of Edinburgh. Sign me the fuck up.
This was a captivating quick read. I loved the distinct and single minded focus Hazel targeted her medical studies with, her curious nature, resourcefulness and determination to aid others. She was rather naïve at times but ultimately a rather brilliant protagonist that I could appreciate. The fact that, by the end of the book, Hazel is simply content with being a witch in a hedge, brewing medicine and saving babies is just everything.
Also: special mention for the drama of Hazel choking on her tea when Iona dares assume she'd be able to survive with only ONE BOOK if she had to spend a day in the park.
Jack, the resurrectionist was, in fact, my sweet boy who I must protect. Growing up poor on the streets of old town Edinburgh, Jack's reality was a far-cry from the lavish lifestyle of castle-born Hazel. Etching out a meagre income digging up bodies for medical students of the royal anatomist's society, Jack meets Hazel. You cannot convince me that there isn't something romantic about digging for a body together and kissing in the grave - Mary Shelley who?
I, for one, am also a big fan of how completely in awe Jack is with Hazel. Every medical procedure, every time he see's her studying, examining a body, he's just overcome by how incredible he finds her. I am determined for this to be my future(my future being a soft man in awe of my medical skills not grave-robbing).
"Hazel Sinnett, you are the most miraculous creature I have ever come across, and I am going to be thinking about how beautiful you are until the day I die." Like, are you kidding me.
God, there are so many quotes I've highlighted that are just artful and so romantic, and utterly horrifying. I am so very tired but filled with such love for these characters.
My only qualms are that this book was way too short. The last 15% of the book felt so abrupt and rushed in its conclusion, I would've wanted more expansion into the murder subplot of the book and how Jack and Hazel's relationship changed in the lead up to the final exam. It felt quite disjointed, and the ending didn't do the book justice compared to the first three quarters of it - very anti-climatic. I really wanted their relationship to have been fleshed out just that little bit more, which really wasn't achieved in only three-hundred something pages.
The way Hazel figured out the truth behind the murders and disappearances, then kinda just went "Okay, but that's none of my business tho." Sis stayed in her lane and I kinda respect that. Unproblematic queen.
In conclusion: give me more Jack and Hazel.
4/5 stars, gonna weep bye.
