Poor Things meets Frankenstein meets Bridgerton meets Claire from Outlander. This book is an excellent combination of everything good that you want it dark medical academia book. Hazel is wonderfully charismatic and brilliant and Jack is the perfect lovesick companion. I was completely caught off guard with the plot twist at the end and I cannot wait to read the second book.

This was a really good read! It was certainly a page-turner and was a mix between historical fiction and mystery with a touch of romance. The twist at the end was a little out there for me and the romance didn’t follow the trajectory I thought it would. It started as a slow burn and ended as a slow burn.

4.5⭐️ I really didn’t know if I was going to enjoy this book, but I actually loved it so much!! (brb on my way to go get the second right now) This is a gothic romance novel set in 1817, which has the main female character aspiring to be a surgeon (obvs unheard of at the time) that fights and tricks society by learning how to be one. She finds it easier once she meets a ‘resurrection man’ (illegal grave thief/digger essentially) who delivers the deceased to her to allow her to practice her craft. She even opens her family estate to be a hospital to be able to help the poor, which in turn helps her towards her dream. I was just SO SAD about the ending, and I was heartbroken at the fact that it ended so abruptly (like add the second book to the end of the book lol please - but don’t worry I will read the second) The epilogue made an amazing ending and brought back the hope I have for Hazel and Jack <3

(Hörbuch) Mochte die Story und vor allem die etwas ungewöhnliche Love Story, die an eher grausigen ekligen Orten spielt und nicht so clichémäßig und kitschig ist.
Essen während man das Buch hört/liest, ist vielleicht nicht für jeden empfehlenswert.
Am Ende ging es imo in eine komische Richtung, die mir etwas zu surreal war. Deshalb eher knappe 4 Sterne.
Die Hörbuchsprecher:innen fand ich übrigens sehr nice lul
