Well, this was a fun little surprise! I read this after visiting Edinburgh in the fall, where we did a walking tour and learned about the shortage of cadavers for anatomy classes—and how that led to an actual industry of grave-robbing. This book is about exactly that!
The story follows Hazel Sinnett, a young woman in 19th-century Edinburgh who wants to be a surgeon—except women weren’t allowed in medical school. So naturally, she decides to study in secret. To do that, she partners with a “resurrection man” (a fancy way of saying grave-robber) who supplies her with bodies so she can learn anatomy on her own. Casual, right?
It was really cool to learn more about that time period, especially with the mix of actual history, creepy vibes, and a bit of a slow-burn romance. Hazel is smart, stubborn, and determined—exactly the kind of character I root for. If you’re into gothic atmosphere, dark academia, and women defying expectations in the creepiest way possible, give this one a go.

Ugh, so cliché. I'm missing originality and subtlety. Why do I feel like many American authors don't trust their (young) audiences to read between the lines?
Also, sometimes it felt like there were problems in the continuity of the plot. But maybe that was because I was listening to the audiobook.
It started fun but got boring after a while.

“Be patient, be silent, be beautiful and untouched as an orchid, and then and only then will your reward come: a bell jar to keep you safe”.
Great book. The ending was a little off for me, but I enjoyed the read.
Immensely satisfying. Not all of the romance felt fully developed, but the rest of it was so good I didn’t care. Just fantastic historical fiction.
