Reading a book that took place in Edinburgh was like a trip back to my favourite town: I found great delight in recognising all the street names and buildings mentioned. Additionally this was set in the 17th century which is one of my favourite time periods. I very much enjoyed this fast paced, intriguing and gothic tale of mystery and feminism. The elements of historical fiction made the story interesting to follow and being familiar with the history of Scotland I felt quite a lot of joy of recognition. I also think this book has a powerful feministic message which is always a pleasure to see in literature.
Overall it’s a throughly enjoyable and easy read that will pull you into the complicated life of a passionate woman in the 17th century.

I absolutely adored this story- the blend of medicine and history and spookiness was so amazing to read about. Edinburgh comes alive within the pages and Hazel is such a strong main character. I can't wait to read book two!

this book is beautifully atmospheric and gut wrenching. i loved that the combination of romance, mystery, and horror. so gorgeous i could cry.
ALSO:
"Someone should tell you that you're beautiful every time the sun comes up. Someone should tell you you're beautiful on Wednesdays. And at teatime. Someone should tell you you're beautiful on Christmas Day and Christmas Eve and the evening before Christmas Eve, and on Easter. He should tell you on Guy Fawkes Night and on New Year's, and on the eighth of August, just because." He kissed her lips once more, gently, and then pulled away and gazed into her eyes.
"Hazel Sinnett, you are the most miraculous creature I have ever come across, and I am going to be thinking about how beautiful you are until the day I die."

Excellent YA historical fiction with a romance twist and LOTS of gory medical detail! What a refreshing read! Even though it's a story about a privileged young woman with a desire to be a surgeon in the early 19th century-this one could have appeal to guys as well, with the medical lessons, the grave robbing, the plague spreading... The romance is fairly predictable, but that could be another angle-readers who want a historical romance and get swept up in Hazel's desire to be independant and choose her own future.

i thought that this book was great, the one thing i would say is that it could have done without one of the subplots, it felt a bit overdone

My beating heart is still yours, the letter said, and I’ll be waiting for you
To be honest, It is really good than I expected. I never imagined a love story starts with dead bodies, stolen kisses in graveyard (gross).
It is really good. I appreciate that writer shows the correct amount of every emotion perfectly. I like the feminist side of Hazel sinnet(MC)
