HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook!! The narrator had a great accent and I was so immersed in the story. I went through a huge chunk of the book during my first sitting. The storyline, the mystery, the medical background. I loved it!

For some reason I was scared to read this book. I thought I might not like it, that it wouldn't be something for me. But then I started reading it and it was so me. As if this book was written for me. The characters, the worldbuilding, the plot, the romance...everything was really nice and how I like it. (I imagined the cast of Crimson Peak the whole time btw lol.)

So yeah, I recomend this book with my whole heart. There isn't really anything that I disliked about it tbh. Oh wait- that's not true...WHY DID IT END LIKE THAT?! LIKE DUDE!

Set in the early 1800's in Scotland, Hazel is a young women born into the wrong era. She wants to be a surgeon, is fascinated with anatomy, and since she is lady of society she has time to pursue her interests... as long as she keeps it hidden from her mother and stops when she is married to her betrothed. When she sneaks into a live presentation by a famous doctor and learns he is running a school to prepare students for the surgeon test she finds a way to present herself as her dead brother to attend. But her rouse doesn't last long, even though she is best in her class, and she is kicked out. Hazel finds a way to continue her studies with the help of a new acquaintance, Jack, and their relationship grows along side her studies.

I found this love story to not only between two people, but also a love story between Hazel and her passion. So many of the historical factoids woven into the story were very interesting, though I don't recommend reading this while eating as it can be very descriptive. I really enjoyed the author's ability to story tell by saying so much about Hazel, her family, and the time she lived in, without spelling it out in pages. Well done!
