2.5, probably could have been a 3 if I hadn't felt so let down by it.
Because this could have been so good! The cover is stunning, it's set in Edinburgh, which I love, and the overall setting with resurrection men, a mystery and a girl striving to be a surgeon? Amazing!
But in my opinion it was neither here nor there. It wasn't super romantic, it wasn't particularly atmospheric or spooky, it wasn't even interesting in the medical or mystery aspects and I did not care much about the characters. It also loosely threw in fantasy-elements, mostly towards the end, which didn't add to the story in my opinion.

Wow, omggg, what a good book!! I couldn't put it down! the end made me put the book down for a second and just stare at a wall, so that's always good. Such amazing writing. Would one consider this period fiction or historical fiction is my only question when it comes to this book. It seems to be based more on fiction than historical fact, so I shelved it as a period piece, but I'm not sure. Whatever genre this book was, it was amazing! Thank you, Dana Schwartz. I'm off to read the next one
This was a delightful easy read! Traversing the hardships of Scotland as a woman trying to do more than be a lady in society was a wonderful journey.
I wish there had been a little more relationship building between the two main characters but love the possibility of more of that in the second book.
Would recommend for those who enjoy historical reads, and women breaking boundaries on societal norms!
