Argh! This doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but it doesn't end with everything tied neatly in a bow. There is clearly more to come, but I have to wait to buy the next book. It'll be worth it, & I'll definitely read the rest of the series.
Jack is a talented Australian artist who is given a graduation gift from his parents, a ticket to visit relatives in England. He travels by ship, & meets a fellow traveller named Margaret. She's also a talented artist, & recognizes Jack has promise as an painter. She introduces him to some influencial friends in London, who in turn procure a place for him in a prestigious art school in Paris. There, he meets fellow painter Andes & his beautiful sister Sofia. Jack makes a new life for himself in Paris, but his parents expect him to return to Australia to take a position at his father's accounting firm, relegating Jack's art to a hobby. He must chose between his new life, or the life his family expects of him.
I'm surprised to learn that Penny Fields-Schneider is a first-time novelist. Her prose is wonderful & her characters are three-dimensional. I loved her descriptions of the art world & the people in them. The novel is sprinkled with a few historical people (members of The Bloomsbury Group, Picasso, Gertrude Stein) that makes it all the more exciting & vivid. I was excited to read it & sad for it to end, but I'm also glad to know there's more to the story.

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads' giveaway. This was a fantastic book that takes place mainly in 1930s Paris when a young artist receives a gift of a trip from his home in Melbourne to Paris. I loved imagining what it was like in Paris and imagining what the art looked like. I would definitely recommend to any readers who like books with artists or art as themes and readers who love reading about the time periods around and including World War II.
