I went into the book not really knowing who Louise Penny was, and I’m so glad I picked it up! This book is the first of many in a mystery series centered around Inspector Armande Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec as he investigates a murder in a small, cozy village in Quebec.
I loved how the book was written. It was cozy, and initially didn’t feel like a murder mystery novel. It was a bit slow at times, but I plan on reading others in the series.

A quick and cozy mystery that felt like a fresh and modern Poirot. Enough clues and red herrings to keep me from guessing the murderer, but they weren't so wildly unexpected that the conclusion made no sense.
forward to getting to know Armand Gamache & co across more books!

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. It is exactly the sort of book you'd like to curl up with in front of a fireplace. It was solidly written and had really nice set of characters. I was invested in the mystery until the end and I didn't guess in advance. I'm looking forward to picking up the rest of the books in this series.

I had been recommended this book but it was such a slog to finish it - it just never gripped me and the characters were mildly irritating the whole way through.
