I just found this book on the library shelf, didn't expect much, but really enjoyed it. I love the combo of history and supernatural thriller.

Nice and creepy.

Interesting and atmospheric.

It was a good adventure with Dr. Bond, guessing who's who with all the ups and downs. I love how Pinborough dragged me from a world I knew to a world so new and twisted it again. Four stars for helping me get rid of my reading slump. I enjoyed every second I have with this book but what was that ending? I think I have to venture bookstores for the sequel and look for that one more star I believe it deserves!

Putting down about 40% in.

This title has a lot of good reviews and I don't really understand why. I really wanted to like it, but I've read a lot of historical fiction, and maybe my standard is too high, or maybe I've burned myself out on Victorian-era stories. My main problem was not finding the main characters interesting, like, at all. There was hardly anything to distinguish the POV of Dr Bond from Inspector Whomever (I don't even remember his name, he was so boring), besides one of them having an opium addiction and one of them being attracted to his friend's daughter. And there was a weird guy who was clairvoyant or something, but his scenes weren't particularly captivating either. Sigh.

Nice mix of paranormal and historical fiction. I feel there were some loose ends that weren't tied up.

I find human killers to be more interesting than monsters, so this did not do so much for me. I liked the main character, but that was not enough to overcome the rest- the disposable prostitutes, supernatural eastern Europeans and monstrous killers. Not my thing overall.

Sarah Pinborough's new victorian crime novel is brilliant. A gothic and brooding mystery set to the backdrop of Jack the Ripper's London and with a creepy supernatural twist. I really loved it.
