This is one of King’s lighter, less gory novels. The narration is hilarious and buoyant. The storyline is one we’ve all read before but with King’s quick wit and ability to create a compelling story, it didn’t read as overdone. The ending took me by surprise in an abrupt way.

লিটারেরি এজেন্ট টিয়া কঙ্কলিন একজন সিঙ্গেল মাদার। ছেলে জেমি কঙ্কলিনকে নিয়ে বেশ সচ্ছল জীবন-যাপন করছিলো সে। দৃশ্যপটে বাবা না থাকলেও অন্য আট-দশটা বাচ্চাকাচ্চার মতো "প্রায়" সাধারণ দিনকাল কাটছিলো জেমির - একটি বিষয় ছাড়া। খুব অল্পবয়স থেকে নিজের মধ্যে একটি ক্ষমতা টের পায় জেমি। সে মৃত মানুষ দেখতে পায়। লেখকের ভাষায় "Not like that cinema with Bruce Willis in it" অর্থাৎ অন্যান্য যেসব এই ধরণের ঘটনা শোনা যায় তার থেকে জেমির বিষয়টা একটু ভিন্ন। সদ্য মৃত যাওয়া মানুষদেরকে দেখতে পায় জেমি এবং তাদের সাথে কথাবার্তা চালাতে পারে। সময় বাড়ার সাথে সাথে আস্তে আস্তে তাদের কথাবার্তা মলিন হয়ে আসে এবং তারপর তারা আর দেখা দেয় না।
প্রথমে তার এই "ক্ষমতা" তার মায়ের কাছে ছোট বাচ্চার নিছক কল্পনা বা হ্যালুসিনেশন মনে হয়। কিন্তু ধীরে ধীরে বিভিন্ন ঘটনা সচক্ষে দেখে বিশ্বাস হতে শুরু করে তার। জেমির নিজের কাছে পুরো ব্যাপারটা হয়তো অতোটা পীড়াদায়ক ছিল না - সময়ে সময়ে দুর্ঘটনায় মারা যাওয়া কিছু ক্ষতবিক্ষত ধরণের লাশ দেখে ভয় পাওয়া ছাড়া। সেটাও বদলে যেতে শুরু করলো একসময়। নিজের ক্ষমতার কারণে ক্রমাগত বিপাকে জড়িয়ে যেতে থাকলো জেমি কঙ্কলিন।

"Later" পড়ার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলাম গতো বছরের শেষ থেকে। বই পাবলিশের সময়েই এসে সেকেন্ড প্রফেশনাল পরীক্ষা পড়ে গেলো আমার, কিভাবে যে দাঁত কামড়ে সহ্য করেছি বিশেষত অন্যদের পড়তে দেখে নিজেও জানি না

Short, fun, and very entertaining. I would like to see King write more books with the main character, Jamie Conklin. Great character. The final “twist” revelation felt unnecessary and almost made me take away a star.
I'm becoming more and more of a fan of newer Stephen King. While I tend to agree that his earlier classic works are superior to many of his latest releases, I do still find these newer ones highly enjoyable.
Later may not be a horror story the way most King constant readers are hoping for, but it is a creepy crime drama with some strong supernatural elements. And, once again, King chose to make a kid his main character. Very similar to my thoughts on The Institute and the beloved It, I find that King is at his best when he writes children. The same way that Danny Torrance is the real star of The Shining, Jamie Conklin shines in a new way in Later. The story follows Jamie from age 6 to about 22 as he harnesses his ability to speak to dead people. Now don't worry, this is not a rip-off of The Sixth Sense, as King immediately points out when this notion is introduced. Jamie can only speak to the dead for about a week after they've died as the ghosts get closer and closer to fully moving on to the after life. Later tells the tale of what happens when adults begin to use Jamie's powers for their own self-serving purposes. Some are for the best, while others are for the worst.
I found Later to be fast-paced and engaging, with many characters harnessing layers of depth that would normally be difficult to derive from a 260+ page novel. The brevity of this novel is something rare for King, but definitely gives him the ability to really build up and flesh out his conclusion in ways many of his door stoppers lack. For fans of King's novella 1922 or his well-regarded novel The Dead Zone, the story telling and plot devices are quite similar to those utilized in Later.
Overall, Later is a fun, sophisticated pulp story with an extremely disturbing ending. I won't give away what happens, but be prepared, because I was not. King has definitely improved on writing conclusions over the years, and this is a continued step in that direction.

Fue difícil no darle 5 estrellas al libro porque es magnífico de inicio a fin. Me gusta la manera en la que la historia va en un constante crescendo casi imperceptible hasta el final.
Un libro para empezar a leer a King, porque es muy fácil de leer.
Aparte de ser un excelente libro, queda como el primer libro que leí 100% en inglés.
