sad. sweet. heartbreaking and atmospheric but with a small glimpse of hope at the end for a character who deserves it to get  a better ending.

This book was incredible. The writing was raw, uncensored, emotional, and culturally appropriate. This is a book that could only have been written by a true artist of Scotland.
The book deals with complex and confronting themes such as religion, LGBTQ+ relationships, Intimate Partner Violence, drug use, and childhood sexual assault in a raw and emotional way which gives realistic representation to these important social issues without diminishing their impact or romanticising them.
The book follows Mungo and his family through the lens of the Glasgow public/social housing schemes. The book shows the growth and development of Mungo and his own journey to self discovery and actualisation. The book highlights the compounding complexities of society, culture, and religion and the discontent and disconnect that these can create in all relationships not just Queer relationships.
The book is heralded a “gay Romeo and Juliet” however I think the book offers much more than just a queer retelling of a Shakespearian tragedy. This book is in a class of its own. I would not be surprised if this book is studied in schools and universities for years to come.

I actually nearly finished this in a day. I was reading it between tasks at work, walked to the bus stop reading it. Got on the wrong bus because I was so engrossed in it, near halfway to Nairn before I realised it was the wrong one.

Struggling to give a rating. This book is incredibly violent and miserable and I didnt enjoy reading most of it, but having finished it I do really the value of having read it.

As a stand-alone, this is a great book but as a part of the literature and queer books I find it sad that gay men are always characters in sad, hopeless stories (this was not totally hopeless but mainly hopeless). The story made me sad and angry. I added tons of content warnings in this review and I think that tells you something.

The writing was dark, detailed and disgusting - loved it! Finnish translation was amazing too!
