Well, this graphic novel was a mess, plain and simple.
The artwork didn't work for me. It was too loud and colourful and flashy, and was almost like a caricature at times. The story was muddled and nonsensical and just stupid and blah.
I read it in pretty much one sitting, and will definitely not be picking it up again. Total waste of time.

Sadly, Miller's sequel to the excellent The Dark Knight Returns is proof that lightning doesn't strike twice. :(

Although the political motivation was very entertaining, the plot and art weren't as enjoyable as the earlier installments in the series.

Moving past the complete eyesore that is the artwork, the story isn't very good at all. Too much going on, and focuses more on Superman than Batman! Absolutely insane that this followed up TDKR, but I'm going to soldier on towards "The Master Race". At least it was a quick read.

This book had some very big shoes to fill, but even as disappointing sequels go, this was particularly disappointing. The story is needlessly complicated and sometimes incoherent. The art isn't up to the same standard as the first volume. It's overall just a questionably ridiculous follow-up to a very serious and gritty and fantastic piece of work. If you want to read everything in either Frank Miller's or Batman's catalog, then go ahead with this one. Otherwise, skip it and save it from tarnishing the wonderful opinions you have of The Dark Knight Returns.

Can I just say, WHAT THE FUCK MILLER!
I love some of the earlier stuff Miller's come out with, but this is just outrageous. The Dark Knight Returns needs no sequel. I am in total agreement with the reviewers here—it truly is a concoction of WTF-ery. Some of it is mind-bogglingly dilapidated like you wouldn't believe and that's OK for the initial adrenaline kick but after 50 pages of that constant mind-whirl, it is very frustrating and near unreadable.
May try again when perhaps inebriated, and not of lucid mind, such as the author might have been when penning this story.
