The HEARTACHE. I officially care about these characters a ridiculous amount. And the character development is NEXT LEVEL. wow.
Tessa is so infuriating and yet, I don’t ever hate her. I want to grab her and yell at her, but I don’t hate her.
The way this book basically started over and threw everything you thought you knew out the window? Loved it. Finding all of the connections was so satisfying and I enjoyed seeing all of the characters develop into truly lovable characters, even if you love to hate them.
I LOVE this Theon.

I really struggled to get through this book. Don’t get me wrong—the writing is excellent, the world-building is phenomenal, and the emotional depth is undeniable. But I personally found the sheer amount of emotional and physical abuse in the story overwhelming. I kept holding out hope that something good would eventually come of it, that all the suffering would be worth it in the end—but instead, it just led to more pain and trauma.
I was especially frustrated by how often Tessa was blamed for things she had no control over. I kept waiting for her to finally take control of her power, to stand tall and put everyone in their place. I waited for her partners to step up, to become the support system she so desperately needed—to keep the promises they made. But none of that truly happened. It was tragic, and honestly, far too realistic for my taste. I prefer my fantasy with a bit more escape and a lot less pain.
That said, I’m not here to bash the book. This is more of a warning: if you're going into this series expecting a redemptive arc with a satisfying resolution and well-earned happiness—turn back. This series will wreck you. I was a mess the entire time, crying more times than I can count. And yes, despite everything, I will absolutely be reading the next book. Because as much as it hurts, I need to see where Tessa's story goes.

This is NOT how it was supposed to end. 😭
This book gave me severe emotional whiplash. One second I was swooning, the next I was ugly crying on the floor. And not just once, multiple times.
The betrayal? Oh, the fucking betrayal.
I knew. I knew it was coming. And called it backfiring the second I figured out who he was. And still, it hit like a blade to the chest. Like it was MY heart breaking. (It probably was.)
And then that? That bullshit of what looks like half a plan? Very Theon-coded, might I add. I can’t believe he actually went through with it. 😭
But gods… he redeemed himself. Now I’m just sitting here wrecked because he made the most selfless decision imaginable.
This series? Top tier. No notes. You’ve officially ruined me, @melissa.
But if you’re going to keep breaking my heart, you better damn well put it back together!
