it did not take me long at all to absolutely devour this book. full of political intrigue, a bisexual love triangle, complex societal expectations and norms all to similar to our own - this book has it all (and more)!!!

what I especially love about this book, as a queer disabled adult who uses sign language, is that disability, sexuality, gender, alternate/augmented means of communication, etc., are all simply facets of life. never do I see a book in which a main character - or so many characters - are disabled and it is not a "pity, shame, how sad, I could never, this is gonna advance so-and-so's character arc!", plot point or traumatic backstory. it simply is. there is so much more I wish I could say, but for fear of my big mouth and I spoiling a thing, let me leave you with this: I cannot recommend this book more; it is simply impossible. I beg you, please join me in this raw, open-hearted, desperate, vengeful quest for adventure and justice and give this series a try.

4.0. Although this book started out not keeping my attention, I ended up becoming really invested in the plot and the characters stories. I’m not sure when I’ll read the next one, but I’m glad I kept with this book, for the themes of colonialism and making social change. I thought that (both Sylah and Anoor’s journeys to better understanding of what their ideal world looks like) was the best part of the book, and it was done excellently.

Wow, what a beautifully written opening! I always love when a book shows you the power and lushness of its writing in the few pages, and the opening to this book did not disappoint. THE FINAL STRIFE is slow-paced and intriguing — I kept wanting to come back to it and know what was happening. It deals with themes of oppression and capitalism. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the map in the finished copy because this world/kingdom/empire has a lot of sections that are separated by the different castes. I’m excited for this book to enter the world and have others gush about it; make sure you pre-order it!

THE FINAL STRIFE features the following rep: trans, non-binary, recovering addict, chronic pain, and PTSD.
