Really love the world building and might return to this later. Just wasn’t in the mood for a heavy, high fantasy at the moment.

I really hated how everyone was using Salah and yet was mad it didn't work the way they wanted. But the book was good and kept a strong pace. The character growth in Anoor was great because I hated her at first, and had some respect for her at the end.

I kind of went in with mismatched expectations. I thought this was a romantasy but is actually more of a political fantasy with themes of power, trauma, oppression etc, and the romance was a very minor focus. While well-written, I found it quite predictable. Don't think I'll be reading book 2.

I feel slightly disappointed with this book. The epigraphs before each chapter added a lot to the world building/lore and I really enjoyed that. The world building was actually my favorite part about this story. Sylah was a really intriguing main character and I did find myself rooting for her. However, the stakes felt really low? The challenges that took place in this book ended just about as quickly as they began and we barely got anything. I thought the writing was really easy to understand and the pacing was quick enough to keep me engaged, but this did drag a bit at times. I feel like if this was a bit shorter it would have worked better for me. I am curious about the next books in this series, but I am also unsure because it took me four days to finish this book which is unlike me.
