I felt like a kid again reading this, turning page after page to figure out what happened next. Beautiful characters, interesting world building, rebellion, plot twists, suspense, romance!! Absolutely cannot wait to start the second book and continue the story.

What happens to the “chosen one” when their plan to crush the empire is destroyed before its even started?
Sylah is angry, she’s frustrated, she’s tired, and she just wants to be oblivious to the world around her. She lives in the wardens empire. In a society, divided by the colour of your blood:
- embers (the red blooded)
-dusters (the blue blooded)
-ghostings (the translucent blooded)
Peoples lives could not be more different. From the top of society where embers use the power in their blood to rule, to the ghostings, who have their hands and tongues amputated at birth, the empire uses the threat of violence to keep the dusters and ghostings in line.
Sylah was one of 12 children to be stolen from the rulers of the wardens empire and raised to be weapons to take down that same empire from the inside years later. But when the ember rulers find the rebels, sylah’s purpose was ripped out from underneath her.
But years later a proposition from a ember noble sets a fire under her and gives her back her purpose… but things have changed and so has Sylah, and Will her old
Allies actually turn out to be new threats?
I was worried when I heard the premise of this book, it sounded very similar to the Red Queen (with the blood based society and the competition plot) but I could not have been more wrong.
The plot was exciting and on the whole the cast of characters were well rounded (apart from Jond who was very clearly there to betray). Sylah and Anoor were obviously the focus and I loved their relationship and their development throughout the book…
But the most intriguing part was Hassa and the Ghostings! I love everything about them, I want to know so much more? How did they get in touch with the mainland, what are the specifics of their plan going forward? More than anything I want to know more about their history and society before the embers!
Also, what or who is Zalaam?

Wow! Back when I picked up this book off of a bookstore shelf, I remember being sold within the first few lines in the description, sure that I knew what type of book it would be and that I would love it. But this book was not at all what I expected it to be, and in a good way (but I was right about loving it!) This story surprised me so many times and all of the little twists and turns made so much sense for the characters’ personalities and the world the book is based in. The plot decisions that I may not have understood in the beginning all came together in the end. I felt that this book handled really complex topics with grace and had such beautiful story telling and a rich cultural tapestry, which I deeply appreciated and enjoyed. The magic of the story even translated all the way through to the book’s dedication and the structure of the acknowledgements pages, making the reader feel included in the story. I honestly feel privileged to be able to read this book and review it. My only criticism of the book is that the pacing in the beginning was a little slow to get into. I had to push myself to keep reading in the beginning. But the payoff was so worth it!
I’m over here excitedly and not-so-patiently waiting to start the second book, as soon as I get home from work!
