I listened to this as an audio book and Jaycee was the narrator. First of all, this is a very horrific story and she was so very brave to tell it. Some of the brutal details made me feel sick to know she had experienced such abuse.

I believe she mentioned that she was writing the book only one year after being rescued, and to me that seemed almost too soon to tell such a traumatizing story. I will never ever say she shouldn’t have told it! However, for me, the story was a bit premature and she still seemed to be in the throes of therapy and healing. I hope she wasn’t forced in some way to tell her story before she was truly ready.

I pray she has found deep and lasting healing from such imaginable and unspeakable evil.

As I was listening to A Stolen Life, I kept asking myself, "how does someone write a review for a book like this?" To help me organize my thoughts, I looked through other people's reviews. There were a lot of comments on Jaycee's writing style being a result of her education level and her need for a ghost writer.
Personally, I think a ghost writer may have made her story less impactful. Sometimes people see the adult that a child-victim becomes and forgets that they were a kid when they were hurt. Jaycee's stream-of-consciousness type of writing (a result of her education or not) made it feel like a 14-year-old girl was reading me her journal entries and that forced me to confront the fact that the person experiencing these horrific things was just a little girl. I was fully crying by the time she was reunited with her family. Listening to Jaycee talk about her love for her mom and sister, her mama-bear attitude towards her girls and the reactions of those who thought they had lost her forever was inspiring and gut-wrenching.

This book is hard hitting, a detailed look into the abduction, imprisonment and abuse Jaycee suffered over an eighteen year period. Somehow she has managed to get through this time and has gotten to a place where she will not allow it to define her two daughters (who were conceived/born during her imprisonment) or her own life.

This was an incredible, terrible, story, obviously a heavy read. It went into a lot of graphic detail - I had to skip through a lot of the book.
I’m not giving it a star rating as it doesn’t seem appropriate.
