There are a lot of fun and cool elements in the worldbuilding of “The Collectors”, but ultimately, some pacing issues and a lackluster showdown diminished my enthusiasm for the book.

Really fun. As audiobook. Great distracting listen - inventive.

I can't say enough good things about this Book! I devoured it! I really liked how much research Jacqueline did on deaf and HOH( Hard of hearing) students to make Van be an authentic HOH character. I really liked the fantasy plot line about the collectors and how everything is not as it seems. That ending has me wanting a second book already! I need to know what happens next! I absolutely recommend it!

Everyone makes a wish once in a while.
But be careful what you wish for.
There are special rules for wishes, or more specific, on what you can wish on. Wishes on ladybugs and eyelashes, or at 11:11 don’t count,
The collectors preserve the wishes.
And not all wishes are good wishes!
But who are there to protect us?

In this epic, unique, mystical story we follow Van who’s a bit of a loner, but has a sight for special things. He sees and notices all.

Cons: It took a long time for the story to get anywhere. The MC seems a lot immature, even for his age, and made it difficult to connect to other characters.

Pros: Complex and innovative story idea. Deeply embedded theme and study into right/wrong. By the end, you were rooting for the MC to figure out which path he would choose.

DNF. It's very creative and I like the inclusivity of a young protagonist who uses hearing aids. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more as a kid, but I just couldn't get into it even though I read about half the book.

Van - boy who wears a hearing aid. Portrayal of mishearing things and interpreting words he does hear when he doesn’t have his bearing aid in.

The first chapter is so engaging. I love the description of the spider and her eyes sparkling like a blackberry. I love how Van isn't noticed by many people but he is super observant himself. I like the slightly eerie fantasy vibe of this one. It is refreshing to have a more light "creep level". It was also hard to tell what side (good or bad) that certain characters were going to be on. I thought it was a unique premise with the stealing of wishes and what happens if they really come true or not.

Notes: Disability, boy with hearing aid, MN author, good audio
