"One little moment that's a bit like magic."

I had such high hopes to Waiting for Tom Hanks because it sounds like such a fun story. I loved the movie set setting, and this was an entertaining and fluffy weekend read.

The main thing that threw me off about this book was the acknowledgement of the lack of diversity in rom-coms within the story (which was good), yet the book was still about two white and straight characters. It was almost like other books/movies were getting called out, yet the author was still okay with perpetuating the lack of diversity. It was very odd, and I didn't understand why it was a major discussion for the main character if it wasn't going to go anywhere.

I found myself not really connecting with Annie, and wishing the book was about Chloe instead. I was very happy to see that book 2 will be about Chloe! Even though I had issues with this book, I would like to still give book 2 a chance, and see if maybe it's gotten better. At times, the Tom Hanks stuff felt like overkill, and I think there will be a little more balance with a different main character.

I eagerly awaited this book's release date, and I expected to love it as much as I love a Tom Hanks rom-com. Sadly, it did not deliver. The story was predictable, which I probably should have expected, given the main character's obsession with rom-coms and meeting her very own Tom Hanks. Annie was probably supposed to come across as quirky gal who loves rom-coms and hasn't had luck finding love, but instead she seemed like an immature woman who had extremely unrealistic expectations. The conflicts in the story were resolved a bit too quickly, and too neatly - let me stew in despair for a while before a happy ending!

2.5/5 stars.

Since Hollywood doesn't seem to put out many good romantic comedies these days (am I missing some good recent ones somewhere?), I've been scratching my rom-com itch via books instead. This one was cute, but an overall focus on casual sex made it lose a few points for me.

Annie is obsessed with romantic comedies ever since watching them with her mom as a kid. She wants to write a rom-com screenplay, and she's looking for someone who reminds her of Tom Hanks classic rom-com characters. When a romantic comedy starts filming in her town, All her personal romantic comedy dreams seem to be coming true.

Content notes:

Language: Not stellar. Lots of f-bombs and other cuss words.

Sexual Content: I was disappointed with this aspect of the book. Annie's best friend is going through a constant stream of one-week stands, and is constantly talking about sex. She wants to know gritty details of Annie's sexual encounters. Lots of sexual innuendos. Musings about different character's homosexuality and bisexuality. Two characters do sleep together in this book. Discussion of a past affair. Alot of sexualized descriptions of character's bodies and physical attraction. Honestly, the amount of sexual content kind of overwhelmed me in this book, even if alot of it wasn't graphic. It was just too much and made me feel gross.

It was a pity that the excessive focus on sex was included, because otherwise I enjoyed this story and thought it was cute. It would have had more stars from me if it was cleaner.

Sweet, predictable rom-com. Nice light reading with a HEA.
