I LOVE that Zeitian maintained So much of her feminine rage. Loved how hateable but reasonable Qin Zheng was. I’m a big fan of sneaking conversations about power wealth and consent into a YA novel but comes off a little dry and educational in some spots. I can’t decide if I like where the author seems to be directing the series, but I like that scope they’ve given the story.

Rated it a step lower because the pace was slow for my personal liking. I think this is going to be a very important book for 2025, especially with the new polical cycle we will be facing. Honestly. My first thought was "this is what happens when we let children be in control of a government" 😂 I am absolutely looking forward to book 3. It's also important to note that bodily consent is not limited to sexual acts. It's includes anything done to your body with or without your knowledge and this is violated several times in the book.

Devoured it same day it arrived. I'm not okay. Can't wait for the third book.

Heavenly Tyrant was a huge shift from Iron Widow. Going from the tender romance of the three in the first book to the
abusive and controlling relationship
in this one gave me whiplash. Seeing ideologies that I believe in be used by a tyrant was also jarring. All in all, the book was a good story on its own, but it took me a while to get on board with it after book one. I do like where it left off and how it is set up for the next book.

The most intriguing part of this book was the political discourse and the gradual rebuilding of the empire they crumbled. Wu Zetian and Qin Zheng's relationship is the definition of "It's Complicated". The ending left me wanting to see how the rest of the series will close, and if their entire world, and perhaps the universe, will change for the better.

My expectations were high going into Heavenly Tyrant and even then they have been exceeded. Just like Iron Widow, the book grabs you by the throat from the first page and refuses to let go. Time and the outside world cease to exist when reading this book. And yet, we have a slower pacing that allows the reader to sink more into the world and fleshes that world out. The prose has only gotten better and vivid imagery burns into the brain. The characters are complex; one minute you hate them, one minute you love them. All minutes are wonderfully conflicting. Genuinely I am quite shocked at how much Heavenly Tyrant has improved upon Iron Widow and I will spend every waking moment waiting for this third book. I feel like the last 72 hours have been a glorious fever dream and I’m struggling with coming up for air. Incredible book.

This book was good, definitely not what I expected.

This book has a very different pacing from that of the first book. While Zetian was under the influence of one bad system, she becomes essentially a caged person of another system in the second book. And while that changes the pacing, how a revolution works (I would love if Xiran actually wrote nonfiction regarding revolution, communism, capitalism and intersectionality) is much slower at a more glacial pace. And while what we see is communism, this is essentially a dictatorship under Qin Zheng, who might as well care about the masses, truly doesn't understand that a lot of things can go wrong in his vision and a lot of people can interpret, nor does he has the ability to see people's lives through a different lens. To people who are shipping him with Zetian, I really want to let you know that he might be bringing in results and change, but he's definitely not a good guy. He violates Zetian's autonomy multiple times, and doesn't let her choose. I believe he likes her because he wants to 'tame the shrew' something neither Shimin or Yizhi ever tried, and I can practically smell those Darklina shippers who are going to come here shipping Qin Zheng and Zetian and I am heavily disappointed.

As for the romantic relationship takes a complete backseat. That is okay for me, I would rather have no romance than be a shitty one, but IDK why Zetian needed to sleep with Qin Zheng in the physical realm at least. While I am not shaming her for sleeping with someone other than love interests, her actions can have bad consequences which could have been avoided.

And the final segment of the book is just insane. All this for capitalism and getting orichalcum (come on it's orichalcum from Atlantis) is good. All in the name of capitalism and all I can say what's going to be the conclusion of this series? Capitalism is bad, but communism and dictatorship is bad as well so what's the ideal system that Xiran wants for their fantasy world?

Overall I had a fun time. It was a good book.

P.S.: I knew Shimin was coming back. But man I missed him dearly throughout the book. I never wanted to hug a man in a book this badly!
