I used to adore this book. It was my favorite book for years. Well, one of my top five favorites. Perhaps it still is. But now, as a 30-year-old woman, nearly 10 years after I first encountered it, I see Rob and all his narration for the male-centrism and misogyny they are. Slight bummer. But still a fantastic book that makes me ashamed of my paltry record collection.
I love Nick Hornby's style of writing. I also can very closely relate to Rob and his love of all things music, as well as his affinity for vinyl. This was one book I read after seeing the movie, but the movie followed the book so closely it almost didn't matter.
High Fidelity is a funny, romantic, music based novel which attracts any 80s-90s music fan. The book was such a well written book making it extremely easy to read and even though it's not the longest book, it's still worth the read. I honestly enjoyed the book (after it being recommended by a friend) and loved all the music references every third line. Which could be seen as repetitive but defiantly not annoying.
"When Laura hears the opening bars she spins round and grins and makes several thumbs up signs, and I start to compile in my head a compilation tape for her, something that's full of stuff she's heard of and full of stuff she'd play. Tonight, for the first time ever, I can sort of see how it's done."

I really enjoyed this book. I don’t really like Rob, but I don’t hate him either. I found him to be an entirely believable character , probably because I am acquainted with a few robs about whom I feel the same. It’s a nice palatable chunk of story telling.

Shockingly, this is the first Nick Hornby novel I have ever read. How that is possible, I do not know, as this book is quality. I had seen the movie before, but upon cracking open the book, I realized that I had no recollection of what was going to occur to Rob in this novel.
Hornby gives readers an honest character; Rob can't hide his thoughts from us, and his observations and feelings ring true (although I feel this book is often lauded as a peek into the male psyche, some of what Rob shared resonated with me, a female reader). Because of this, Rob felt more like someone I knew in real life than a fictional character. At times I really liked him; other times, he creeped me out and made me feel uncomfortable, and that is the real triumph of this book. Rob could be any of us; maybe, he is, in fact, many of us.
I've got About a Boy waiting for me on my shelf; it won't be too long before it joins me on my daily commute.

There is a lot of middle-aged angst and wry observations on life. It's a touching story that's also humorous since it's so true to life.
