I read this book after watching the movie and was actually fairly impressed with how well the book was adapted. Hornby writes great characters and you get a good feel for who they are and their actions feel honest and true.
The consent in the one scene right at the beginning just noooo
“Well, I’m sexist, aren’t I? Is that the right answer?”
I think this line about sums up my experience reading the book. Yes Rob. That is the answer. Reading this book made me want to question my own memory having grown up loving the film. My God, I didn’t remember this character being a misogynistic prick. I wanted to bail on this one after the first chapter but I just needed to see how bad it was going to get. If anything I felt like it gave me insight into the mind of my ex who has a similar inclinations to be a pretentious douche about music. Normally I’m the annoying person who never wants to watch the movie before reading the book it’s based on, but I think this book makes a case for doing the opposite every once in a while.

This has been on my TBR forever because I really enjoyed the movie (see: John Cusack bias) however I think my bar was set too high.
First of all, I started this an audiobook and I had to stop because the narrator's voice for the American singer (I forget her name) was just... not it LOL.
Anyways, I guess it was interesting to see the frustrated dating experiences from a male POV but it didn't feel like anything new? Or maybe I just don't like being in a sexually frustrated white, teenage boy's mind.
And as Rob gets older he just becomes worse - at least movie Rob was charismatic - he has no career plans, he treats his co-workers like trash but then wonders why he has no friends, he treats majority of his relationships with too many expectations (like he thinks Charlie is his manic pixie dream girl basically) and the one girl he is with he kinda treats like shit (). Laura deserves better.
Listen, I get it, life can be messy and it's really frustrating to try to figure out adulthood but like?? Rob just grumpily meanders throughout his life but he knows for sure he wants a girlfriend but maybe not a wife?? Then he whines when shit doesn't work out bc it's everyone's problem but his own?? Like, my guy, you're being a self-fulfilling prophecy here.
My favourite character was Laura or even Dick and Barry. They felt real and multi-faceted, especially next to Rob.
Additionally, the ending was suuuuuper rushed and felt like we didn't even really see much change in Rob so...
I'm going to just rewatch the movie.

Almost didn‘t finish this one - the main character is such an asshole for about 235 of the 245 pages.
The character development of Rob went from huge jerk to a little less of a jerk, but the writing was good and I still found it an enjoyable read to a certain degree.
