I think this book is best as its original medium -- a play. Many things happen out-of-scene, and toward the end I wondered a few times if I had missed an entire section. It's an alright book, but only alright.

ich frag mich bei so vielen klassikern wie zur hölle die so beliebt waren und immer noch so beliebt sind und das ist mal wieder ein perfektes beispiel. faust ist schon lustig und tragisch und beeindruckend und krass. aber wie ist es das buch der deutschen literatur geschichte geworden?
ich werde es fürs erste nicht bewerten, einfach weil sich meine meinung vermutlich noch über das jahr (in dem ich mich sehr intensiv damit auseinandersetzen werde) ändern wird.

The relentless misogyny pisses me off but I’d love to see certain scenes onstage. The language and wordplay are fun, as well, and the interrogation into what constitutes “Spirit” or “Understanding” to invoke Hegel, but I can’t stand the suffering piled onto Gretchen as a vehicle for Faust’s enlightenment.
Well I tried, but I still don’t enjoy reading poetry.
