Dense with meaning and symbolism from beginning to end, Goethe's FAUST is truly a tremendous work of literature. A story of divinity, humanity, ambition, regrets, mistakes, and fantasy that is as beautiful to read as it is to think about. Stellar in every way!

Never has a translation confused me so much as this one. Faust is seemingly riddled with double-entendre and humor. Mephisto and Faust both have jokes that I wanted to laugh at, but humor is truly something best enjoyed in one's native language. Half the time I was left wondering if the meaning I received was intended in the original German at all. On several occasions I came across English idioms that are so modern I didn't even understand their meaning in the context. The rhyme scheme of the verse is sometimes pleasing, other times inconsistent, and other times completely absent. This translation was so jarring that I found it difficult to get past the text itself. I think the translator, David Constantine, took great liberty with the source material and attempted to create in English a similar experience to the German. I definitely would prefer a closer translation, this one feels like I read the book through a game of telephone (Teletranslation). I've read plenty of Russian and Japanese novels and have never experienced this problem of translation.
Beneath the hazy fog of David Constantine's added effects, I thought Faust was at times incredibly gripping and other times a bore. Goethe has created two incredible characters in Faust and Mephisto. He's made the Devil himself seem such an amicable fellow, like you could grab a beer with him. I would love to see this play on stage. I don't know what Part Two holds, but I suppose I'll find out. I just wish I could read German!
