From the end of the previous book I was already screaming on the inside how cruel Apollo was to poor Eva. The beginning of this book was an emotional rollercoaster because for a second there I had started pitying Apollo too, until he chose to proceed with his cruel and egocentric deeds.

Jacks until the very end kept being a complicated enigma, as per usual, with his constant contradictions between thoughts, actions and feelings. The part about his heart still has me perplexed as it's never mentioned that he's picking it back up or it returning magically to his chest, which in my head suggests it would've been affected by everything that transpired around the tree of souls, but oh well.

Eva's storyline felt a bit forced to me, at leat in the beginning. With the way she instantly remember that her heart is aching and that she needs to say something to someone it never properly felt established that she'd truly forgotten. Maybe if she experienced such glimpses of ache a bit less, or if they had been more fleeting it would've felt more appropriate and immersive for the reader who's eagerly waiting for her to remember. And the way she did finally regain her memories felt rushed and way too quick for me to properly cheer for her as it almost happened by the snapping of fingers.

I did enjoy the book overall, it was a pleasant finish to the series as a whole and last line suggests there might be more books in this universe to come, which I'm looking forward to!
