Not as good as other redwall books, but still a good read. Meldrum and Finnbarr were two fantastic characters.

This was another great installment in the series! It was also great to revisit Mariel and Dandin again- I really love those two. Perhaps the best part of the book was Blaggut's storyline- I enjoyed seeing his character evolve and change. I hope we get to revisit him incasing in later stories. Although I loved following the larger cast of characters, it was a bit hard to keep them straight at times and I didn't develop as deep of an attachment to them as I normally do. Still a great book and I look forward to continuing on in the series.

It wasn't my favorite story, but it felt like a genuine effort to bring new elements into the Redwall universe. The main quest is out to sea, there are two big baddies instead of one, and there's a sea rat with a heart of gold that honestly might be my favorite character in the whole series. You wouldn't call it a revolution, but it's an exploration of how the same old story can be subtly adjusted to cover new ground.

I think I actually much prefer the vermin to the Redwallers, this time around. The internal politics of Urgan Nagru's horde is much more interesting because he has a mate and challenger in Silvamord. I wish their dynamic was more manipulative than mutually abusive, but at least there is some friction. I would love to read a book about their early partnership before they became bitter, when they teamed up together and conquered the North. Maybe I'll write a "Game of Thrones"-style fan fiction where they're both competing for the leadership of the horde with a number of other unseemly characters. But I mean, if I'm going to write fan fiction about any character in the Redwall universe, it's going to be Blaggut, the lovable corsair. His story line is so refreshing--and ultimately bittersweet--that it almost made me cry. You don't expect those kinds of feels out of a young adult rodent novel.

If only Mariel and Dandin had offered half as much as poor Blaggut. I think that's why this one rates lower than the others for me. They feel a little over powered, at points, and even when they're trapped, it feels like a matter of time before they get out of it. There's no cost from their adventure the way that there is in "Martin the Warrior" or "Mossflower". And while Urgan Nagru's horde structure is interesting, he is again quite incompetent. He's no Glaurung the Tyrant.
