When we got to he part where there were like 30 pages left, and Nix was STILL introducing new characters, new layouts, and new details that were IN NO WAY RELATED to resolving the main story that's been building for seven whole books now, I nearly gave up and threw my copy across the room. But I didn't. I stuck it out for that paltry 30pp resolution that was pretty obviously coming, and then got annoyed that I read the whole series. Still don't know what happened to the crab cast. Still sad that Elephant was just a deus ex.

Finally, the series ends and ends well. After feeling as if there's been no change in the character of Arthur and little focus on the other characters, this book strikes the mark. Arthur seems like a much more dynamic character rather than just muddling through blindly. The secondary characters are actually remembered, it's nice to see how they contribute as well. The end is quite satisfying and is a good end to the series, I'm happy to say.

The narrator is quite good as well, I really enjoyed his character voices throughout.

I’m not one to reread books but if I ever did, it’d probably be this series.

What a disappointing series! I think it really started to take a turn for the worst around Thursday. And a heartbreak of an ending didn't make it any better.

Just finished reading this series with my 9-year-old, and we both really enjoyed it. Some of the steampunk/retro elements might need explaining to younger readers, but I thought the premise was really original, and Arthur's evolution over the course of the series was plausible. I also liked that not everything was wrapped up in a happy ending afterwards. Order is restored, but imperfectly, and not without a lot of sacrifice and destruction.
