Not quite the corker I was hoping for (see my review of Superior Saturday e.g. book #6), but the more I think about it, the more I get that the ending is what it needed to be. So while I may have quibbles with scenes that I think should have been included or somewhat adjusted, I have to admit that it's a pretty good wrap up of the series. Not quite the masterpiece that Nix's Abhorsen trilogy is. But a solid piece of young adult fantasy, very well-written, nicely plotted, and containing some striking images and a good dose of humor.
I first picked up this series because it was by Garth Nix, and I loved the Old Kingdom trilogy (a/k/a the Abhorsen trilogy). This series was written younger, and not as detailed, but still quite enjoyable.
The last few books have been a bit so-so. They felt a bit rushed, I suppose. Perhaps it's because the first half of the series is learning and discovering new things, and setting stuff up, and the second half is about the journey to the final battle.
In some ways, I still felt that things were rushed. Things weren't really described in the same way that brought you into the world - more like you were already part of the world, and so, you had to hang on and keep up. Some things were belabored a little bit while others were glossed over. But, overall, it was still good.
But I was worried. Worried about how it would end. Would it be twee and horrible, or would it be worth hanging around for the last 8 or so years?
I was not disappointed. A lot happened that was expected, but just as much happened that was unexpected. And the ending was sort of bitter-sweet - more on the good side than not, but I really liked and appreciated that there was a little sarifice, and that things that were hard won were worth the struggle.
While I still wish there was a bit more time taken in the telling, perhaps - a bit of loving lingering here and there - I can't say I was dissatisfied with the ending, and that's worth a lot these days.

My favourite of all the Keys to the Kingdom series. The ending felt very much like a paired down version of the first Mistborn trilogy, one of my all time favourites.
Great read, so glad I stuck it out to the end.

I love this author's writing style, I love everything I have read by him to date, and I love this series! The end was, at least for me very unexpected but I think it works brilliantly! It's sad and happy kind of made me think of Narnia but not really. I can't really compare it to other books I have read, I just found it inspiring and creative and that is what I look for in all books that I start to read but also in everything and everyone in everyday life! Brilliant worth all 5 stars!
This series ended with a bit of a whimper. Too many ideas that were never fully fleshed out. Just eh.

I briefly thought that this series was Nix's answer to "The Golden Compass" and sequels because of the scope of what it takes on and because of the amount of travel between worlds. I was not disappointed by the ending, only that it ended.
