I picked this up at the library, despite not knowing much about the main series of novels. The art style and character dynamics drew me in, and I'm very interested in diving into the rest of the books. I think I'll wait to read the other graphic novel, as these prequels seem better suited to someone already familiar to the world and the characters. Still, this story painted a vivid picture of the fictional empire and living under its martial law, and I'm eager to see if my library has a copy of the first book.

Loved getting a glimpse into young Elias and Helene. The illustrations were beautiful, especially the scenery; I did feel like the male characters didn't have a lot of differentiation looks-wise, so it was sometimes hard to tell the characters apart. The story felt very on brand for an Ember in the Ashes story and fit in very well with what we know from the main novels.

This is definitely a story that has to be read AFTER reading at least the first book in the Ember in the Ashes series, otherwise it will not make any sense. The worldbuilding of the first main novel needs to be set up before reading this graphic novel series.

I’ve been craving a graphic novel lately, and what better way to sate myself than with a novel revolving around one of my favourite series!

The book is a good, quick read and features Elias as he begins to question the Empire, and Helene who stands as his fierce friend. Tavi, their other companion, is a sweetheart who completely melted me.

The story moves quick and while it doesn’t carry the emotional heft of the main books, there are some dark moments and great dialogue. The art style is nice and the colors really shine on the pages.

This is just what I needed to tide me over until the final book is released!
